Dr. Matthew Lyons, orthopedic shoulder and sports medicine surgeon at Proliance Orthopedic Associates

Dr. Lyons is a Washington native, born in Walla Walla and trained in Seattle at the University of Washington, where he earned his biology degree and his medical degree and completed his orthopedic surgery residency. He then completed two fellowships at the University of Virginia: one in sports medicine and one in hand and microvascular surgery, a combination that gives him uncommon depth across the entire upper extremity. After more than a decade with Kaiser Permanente Washington, where he served as Associate Medical Director for Orthopaedics, he joined Proliance Orthopedic Associates in 2026 to bring specialty shoulder, elbow, and knee care to South King County. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, including his twins.

Research and Publications

Dr. Lyons has authored peer-reviewed research in journals including the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Arthroscopy, and the Journal of Hand Surgery, along with multiple textbook chapters on elbow conditions in Essential Orthopaedics. His published work includes first-author research on cartilage restoration for osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum in adolescent athletes, as well as studies of biceps tendon procedures and shoulder outcomes. During fellowship, he served as an assistant team physician for the University of Virginia and James Madison University athletic programs.

A Shoulder-Led Practice, With Depth at the Elbow and Knee

The shoulder sits at the center of Dr. Lyons’ practice: arthritis requiring total or reverse shoulder replacement, rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, and instability.

The elbow and knee receive the same fellowship-trained attention. He treats elbow conditions in throwing athletes, including UCL injuries treated with Tommy John surgery, and performs knee procedures including ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and cartilage restoration. His published work reflects that range, from textbook chapters on elbow conditions to first-author research on cartilage restoration in young athletes.

This focus matters. Concentrating on a defined set of procedures allows a surgeon to refine technique, stay current with the evidence, and recognize the subtleties that distinguish one problem from another, whether the joint is a shoulder, an elbow, or a knee.

How Dr. Lyons Approaches Care

Surgery is a big decision, and Dr. Lyons believes patients make the best decisions when they truly understand their condition. He takes time to walk through imaging, explain what is happening in the joint, and lay out the full range of options, including nonsurgical ones. When surgery is the right choice, he wants you going into it informed, prepared, and confident in the plan.
